Arlington National Cemetery is an American military cemetery established during the Civil War on the grounds of Arlington House, formerly the estate of the family of Robert E. Lee’s wife, Mary Anna Custis Lee. More than 300,000 persons are buried here on 624 acres. Veterans from every one of the nation’s wars are interred in the cemetery, from the American Revolution through the military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Iwo Jima memorial is dedicated to all personnel of the US Marine Corps who have died defending their country since 1775. Its design was based on the photograph taken by Joseph Rosenthal of the six marines raising the American flag at Iwo.
