St. Augustine
Take your students to the oldest continually occupied European settlement in North America where, in 1565, Pedro Menendez founded the city of St. Augustine and claimed this New World in the name of Spain. It was at this location where Ponce de Leon, the official discoverer of America's mainland, planted his flag in 1513. Walk through the Castillo de San Marcos with its elaborate drawbridge entrance suspended above a dry moat. The Castillo and town serve as reminders of the might of the early Spanish empire in the New World.
