At 555 feet 5 and a quarter inches this is by far the tallest structure in Washington DC. In fact, at its completion in 1884, it was briefly the tallest man made structure in the world and it is still the tallest free standing masonry structure.
It is only fitting that the tallest structure in Washington DC would honor the most prominent man of American history. A man who voluntarily surrendered ultimate power not once but twice. A man who could have been king but believed and fought for freedom and liberty. King George is said to have quipped that he must be the greatest man who ever lived when he heard that he had surrendered his power at the end of the Revolutionary War.
