The White House has been a symbol of the American Presidency since it was completed in 1800. Although George Washington oversaw much of the construction of this stately home he never lived there. It was John Adams our second President who spent the first night here on November 1, 1800. He arose early the next morning and wrote his wife Abigail “May none but honest and wise men ever rule under this roof.”
